How to check tyre tread

Your tyres are the only parts of your car that touch the road. So it’s vital they have the right amount of tread. But if you’re not sure how to check your tyre tread depth, this is how to do it:

  • First, make sure your handbrake’s on and the ignition’s off.
  • Turn the steering to full lock for full view of the tyre.
  • On the sidewall, look for ‘TWI’ (Tread Wear Indicator).
  • TOP TIP: Some manufacturers use different symbols, so always check.
  • Above TWI, you’ll see little blocks. These are the Tread Wear Indicators.
  • If the tread is level with the Indicators, it’s at its legal minimum depth. Your tyre needs changing immediately!
  • TOP TIP: The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm. But for your safety, the depth should be no less than 3mm.
  • Your tyre may have a bald spot, so check for wear in different places.
  • There’s another way to check the tread.
  • The bevelled edge of a 20p coin is 3mm deep.
  • If you can’t see that edge, the tread is OK.
  • For more accurate checks, get a manual or digital tyre depth gauge. They’re easy to use.
  • Don’t forget to look in different places around the tyre.
  • TOP TIP: If you change tyres from front to rear, it can help them last longer. Just ask your Ford Dealer.
